INTRODUCTION Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-shortening genetic disease affecting Caucasian populations (Gibson et al 2003). It is a complex multi-system disorder, primarily involving the respiratory and digestive systems. Exacerbations of respiratory symptoms are frequently treated in hospital with intravenous antibiotics and intensive physiotherapy (Rosenberg and Schramm 1993). In order to maximize quality of health care during hospitalization, physiotherapists can use functional capacity tests to gather baseline performance data such as distance walked and physiological function (such as heart rate and oxygen saturation), from which to monitor change and to guide management programs.
